The Quiet Discipline Behind Every Rhizome
At Vedamint, sustainable agriculture isn't something we chase on a certificate; it's the quiet discipline behind every rhizome we grow. Long before our haldi flakes, haldi powder, black turmeric flakes, and black turmeric powder reach your kitchen, they begin as a commitment: to the soil, to the season, and to the farmers who've spent generations perfecting this craft.
Same Roots, Different Journeys
Yellow turmeric (Curcuma longa) and black turmeric (Curcuma caesia) belong to the same family and share similar climate needs: warm temperatures between 20°C and 30°C, and rich, well-draining loamy soil. But their growing methods diverge in ways shaped by rarity, maturation time, and purpose.
| Growing Parameter | Yellow Turmeric | Black Turmeric |
|---|---|---|
| Growth | 9 to 10 months | 9-10 months (sometimes 2–3 years to bulk up) |
| Yield | Abundant, highly scalable | Rare, lower yield, high-value |
| Sunlight Needs | Full sun with regular watering | Partial shade, careful water management |
| Primary Use | Culinary spice, daily wellness | Traditional Ayurvedic remedies |
This is why our clean, chemical-free turmeric farming approach isn't one-size-fits-all. Each rhizome is grown according to what it actually needs, not what's convenient for scale.
Black turmeric has a striking bluish-black colour — but unlike its yellow cousin, it doesn't get that colour from curcumin at all. Its potency comes from rare compounds like camphor and ar-turmerone, a big reason Ayurveda has treasured it for centuries as medicine rather than a kitchen spice.
From Soil to Shelf: Our Process
Good soil health is where everything begins. Our farms rely on organic manures like farmyard compost and vermicompost, avoiding synthetic fertilizers that strip the earth of its long-term fertility. Rhizomes are propagated from healthy "mother" pieces, planted in raised beds that protect against waterlogging. Once mature, harvesting is done entirely by hand, lifting rhizomes gently from the earth without bruising or cutting them.
Roots and soil are removed by hand, and rhizomes are cleaned. After cleaning, they are washed several times.
Spread out and dried until moisture content drops to a level where they can be stored and are also very stable.
Dried rhizomes are further cleaned and sorted to select healthy rhizomes, which are sliced and dried so that the colour and odour stay consistent.
Turned into flakes for a coarse form that is processed very finely. or milled further into fine powder.
Black turmeric follows a similar rhythm, though its rhizomes are often sliced and dried with extra care, given their lower yield and delicate, camphor-rich composition.
Vedamint Harvest Calendar
At Vedamint, we never rush the process. From planting to the moment our herbs reach your shelf, every stage is guided by the cycles of the season, careful observation, and patient craftsmanship.
Seeds are sown in soil that is rich in nutrients before the monsoon begins. This timing gives each crop a start that is possibly the strongest.
Plants are nurtured through farming practices that are really natural, with the soil that is monitored on a regular basis, irrigation, and careful weed management that is careful without compromising the ecosystem.
Plant leaves start maturing by turning from green to yellow and later falling down on the soil and start decomposing. Developed or grown rhizomes remain in the soil, so they become mature by developing color, aroma, and nutrition. Harvesting happens when rhizomes become mature.
Herbs are harvested only after reaching a level of maturity that is peak. This ensures maximum flavour, aroma, and value in terms of nutrition.
Herbs that are harvested naturally are cleaned and washed, naturally dried and cured under conditions that are controlled very carefully to preserve their essential oils and compounds that are very active.
Every batch is sorted by hand, checked for quality, and packed to retain freshness before leaving the farm.
Your Vedamint herbs arrive in a way that you can trace them right back to their source. This carries the care of our farmers and the integrity of our growing methods.
Sustainable agriculture isn't just about what's absent — it's about what's present: attention, tradition, and respect for the land.
When the health of the soil is protected season after season, the harvest that follows carries that integrity all the way to your cup or the shelf of your kitchen. This is the quiet science behind Vedamint — a promise kept from field to family.
